MEGAHOME WATER DISTILLATOR REVIEW ON THE ZELENARIUM BLOG:

There are also slightly cheaper distillers on the market. What's the catch?

At the beginning of 2012, our first 2 shipments were cheaper Chinese-made distillers. Many of them returned to us for service a few months after the sale, with various malfunctions. Since we care about our customers first, we gave up on Chinese devices as soon as we found a reputable world-class manufacturer on the market (Megahome, Taiwan). Instead of servicing old Chinese distillers, we exchange our customers for a new reliable model. Since a distiller is a device that combines electricity, water, steam, motor, boiling heat and regular operation of at least 5 hours a day, even the smallest defect in production and material selection will manifest itself in the device's malfunction. Only with Megahome distillers (made in Taiwan) have we achieved our high standard of quality that allows for at least 7 years of daily flawless use. Moreover, the taste of water from a Megahome distiller is excellent, and noticeably more acceptable than the taste of distilled water from our old Chinese-made model.

A frequently asked question from Split from February 2018, regarding recent rumors about the presence of arsenic in the water supply after the water became cloudy and the drinking water ban, does a distiller help?

To begin with, I don't believe that arsenic has found its way into the water supply, but the clouding of the water and the ban on drinking water means that there is some pollution, much more likely organic matter than harmful chemicals. As for arsenic, Wikipedia says that the boiling point of arsenic is 614°C, which means that if arsenic is present in the water, it has no chance of evaporating during distillation where the maximum temperature in the evaporator is equal to the boiling point of water of 100 C, to pass as a gas through the condenser into the jug of water. All arsenic, if there is any, will settle at the bottom of the evaporator pot along with scale, and will be thrown out when the container is cleaned. As for the cloudiness, if there is any soil, bacteria, viruses in the water... all of that will also remain at the bottom of the container, it is biologically impossible for anything living to evaporate at the boiling point of water and to enter the condenser with water vapor at a temperature of 100 C and return from a gaseous state to a solid state again, and to remain alive in the process. Distilled water is 100% free from bacteria, viruses, amoeba and any single or multicellular organisms.

Fresh distilled water, stored in a glass jug or glass bottles, is extremely suitable for regular consumption - drinking pure water, it is excellent in juices, soups, tea, coffee, also for pets... and will also be used for irons, steam cleaners, batteries.

We would like to thank all our customers who have owned our first distillers since spring 2012 for their trust. We are extremely pleased to hear from our customers that the distiller works at least once a day, and that drinking distilled water has become a completely new healthy habit for them. We have heard stories about the beneficial detoxifying effect of distilled water, and customers' gratitude for enabling them to drink completely pure water. We have heard stories about the colors, types and 'smells' of scale and distillation residues that vary greatly from city to city. One story from 01.09 was a customer's comment that the residue in the evaporator suddenly smelled... only to find out a few days later that on that very day, after a downpour, the water in the water supply was somehow polluted and different than usual.

Follow our regular promotion at the Mystic fair in Zagreb every autumn. We noticed during the fair that the water from the Zagreb Fair, with which we filled the distiller, leaves quite ugly dark stains after distillation, in addition to the usual limescale.

It comes in three colors, the price is identical regardless of the color:

stainless steel - white (code 505BS) stainless steel - black (code 505CS) white (code 505B)

The device is manufactured in Taiwan, by the renowned distiller manufacturer Megahome Corporation, with a 10-year tradition of selling around the world, especially in America.

We guarantee top quality, proven technology, excellent design, completeness of the device, equipment and packaging down to the smallest detail, and of course the reliability of the device, which since its promotion in 09/2012 has become a new member of the VerVita range of devices, and our small contribution to improving the quality of life.

We also found the experience of a vegetarian athlete who has been drinking 2-4 liters of distilled water for 6 years and is in perfect health, and all employees in that center drink distilled water.

I am absolutely baffled and dumbfounded by some of the information that people have posted here! Unless I have passed to the other side and am totally unaware of it, DI water is about the best tasting thing on the planet. I am an avid athlete - yoga, pilates, half marathoner, weight lifter, etc - and have been drinking about a half gallon to a gallon of it for over six years now. Did I mention that I am a vegetarian as well? Guess what? I get flagged for low cholesterol levels and my bloodwork always comes back exemplary. If I do not have DI water with me when I am out, the closet thing to it with regards to taste is Aquafina or Dasani. All of our employees drink and have done so for years, with no side effects.

BRIEFLY ABOUT TECHNICAL DATA AND HOW IT WORKS:

Dijelovi destilatora Parts of the distiller:
The distiller consists of two parts: The lower part is a vessel with an evaporator (heater). The vessel has a capacity of 4 l, made of the same type of stainless steel as the familiar cooking utensils. The upper part is a condensation cover with a cooling fan. The inner part of the cover and the pipe through which the water vapor and condensate pass are also made of stainless steel. At the condensate outlet there is a small flow filter made of activated carbon, through which the water drips into a 4-liter glass jug (or plastic - optional). Activated carbon obtained from coconut shells is the last barrier to harmful substances, and at the same time significantly improves the taste of the resulting water.

Specifications:
Dimensions: diameter 25cm, height 40cm, container diameter 20cm, height 20cm. Evaporator heater power 580W. Noise: constant fan noise, about as loud as a heater. Distillation duration about 5h15min. Fully automatic self-switching off when all the water is used up, i.e. distilled. Distilled water is at room temperature - ready to drink. Double protection against overheating. Electricity consumption about 3kWh per distillation (about 2-3kn).

How it works:
The container is filled with water up to the MAX mark (4l max). Cover with the upper part, connect the cable and turn on the device with the switch. After 30 minutes of operation, distilled water begins to drip from the filter into the jug. Do not forget to place a jug under the filter to catch the water, because without the jug there will be a flood for which the device is not to blame, the device does not know whether the container is in its place or not. The device automatically switches off when there is no more water in the container to evaporate. You can leave the device to work unattended only after you have become familiar with its operation for a few weeks and with three simple actions that need to be done correctly: 1. Water up to MAX, but not over MAX 2. Lid correctly closed 3. Water jug in place.

Cleaning and maintenance:
The lid is detached and moved aside, which does not need to be cleaned, but can be wiped. Up to a teaspoon of scale can collect at the bottom of the evaporator bowl from 4 liters of water. Wash and wipe the scale layer from the evaporator bowl with a sponge or soft steel wool. If solid scale deposits appear at the bottom that cannot be easily removed, leave it for several hours, even better overnight, with a little water to cover the bottom and 3-5 tablespoons of citric acid, just enough to cover the deposits. The citric acid will completely soften the scale so that it can be wiped with a sponge. After a quick cleaning and rinsing, the distiller is immediately ready for the next cycle. It is not necessary to thoroughly clean it before the next cycle... but still, do not let the scale deposits become hard and several mm thick due to lack of cleaning. General descaling every month or as needed when a layer of scale is visible along the entire height of the vessel: pour warm/hot water up to MAX, and a couple of teaspoons of citric acid, leave overnight to soften all the scale, scrub and rinse the next day. The filter is changed after every 30 distillations.

Device running-in:
Either throw away the first water of the new device or use it for ironing. After the second distillation, the water is suitable for consumption. For any longer storage of distilled water, we definitely recommend glass bottles or an original glass jug with a cap/lid. Distilled water can be exposed to the sun in a glass bottle to 'come to life' and gain additional quality.

Energy ecology:
In a family of 2, 1 distillation per day is sufficient. If you are concerned about the device's electricity consumption, which is not negligible, you should know the following: in the winter, all the heat produced by the distiller remains in the house/apartment, just as if you had a radiator or heater turned on - this heat is not wasted, but is 100% used to heat the space. In the summer months, this is not the case - this heat from the distiller is redundant... plan to use the device on the balcony or in the kitchen in the summer when the door, window, etc. are open, to avoid additional heating of the space and additional operation of the air conditioner. One possible idea is to place the device on a special shelf in the bathroom, where the device's operation is used to additionally heat the bathroom, and this also ensures that the fan noise does not disturb the kitchen/living room. If you have a two-tariff meter, plan to turn on the device during a cheaper tariff, overnight, so that in the morning you will be greeted by freshly distilled water at half the price.
Can I do that every day... and who will take care of it... who will clean...
Once you try and experience all the benefits of distilled water on your own body, it will not be difficult for you to carry out the daily routine of cleaning the distiller from limescale and refilling the device (approx. 2-3 minutes), this process is natural to do with ease and gratitude. green . No more worries about chlorine, fluoride, solvents, nitrites, bacteria, heavy metals, scale, odors, tastes... the relief we feel when drinking this water, and the absence of any worries about the purity of the water, is certainly worth the few minutes of activity per day required for 4 liters of clean water. Cleaning and filling the device is not difficult for us in the least, from our first day with the distiller in the kitchen we have become accustomed to distilling water being as easy, simple and enjoyable a task as making coffee used to be.

Device warranty : After a large number of Megahome distillers sold, two years of practice have shown and proven that their reliability is top-notch and the number of failures is zero. For this reason, we have increased the warranty on the complete device from a cautious 2 years (until 09/2104) to a full 7 years (from 10/2014). The new 7-year warranty applies to all parts of the device without exception: heater, electronics, motor, rusting of the pot.

All Megahome distiller buyers until 09/2014 receive a free warranty extension from the current 2 to 7 years (regardless of the 2 years listed on their warranty card).

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS:

Should water be filtered or softened before distillation?
We tested the device with: 1. Zagreb water 2. Well water of exceptional hardness rich in iron oxides 3. with pre-filtered water from a home filter. The difference was noticeable in the amount of scale residue in the evaporator bowl that needs to be cleaned, but the taste of the resulting distilled water was identical. The water, whatever it is, is good enough to use in the distiller without prior treatment - the result should always be the same - the pure evaporated water vapor will condense into the jug, and everything else that is not water will remain in the evaporator pot.

How do you know when the filter is worn out?
It is not possible to determine the wear of the activated carbon filter. We recommend replacing the filter bag every 1st of the month, for average Zagreb water. If the device is used in places with exceptionally high water pollution by volatile chemicals (e.g. the new settlement of Špansko - Zagreb), shorten the duration of the bag or, even better, install 2 bags at once. If water without any chemicals is used (rainwater), the filter bag can last significantly longer than expected.

How much water can be distilled per day?
Although it is theoretically mentioned in some places that 4 cycles of 5 hours and 20 minutes per day are possible (not with us, we are practitioners), the reality is that you will not be able to distill more than 2 cycles per day (a total of 8 liters) every day and regularly. You need to be nearby or not sleeping when the cycle is finished. Wait at least 20 minutes for the distiller to cool down before refilling. Let's be realistic, there are more important things in life than waiting for the distiller to do its thing so that you can immediately restart it. Our months of experience say that 2 cycles per day is no problem, and with the schedule and care of several household members, 3 cycles in 24 hours is easily feasible.

Why does distilled water sometimes taste a little strange?
There are several possible reasons.

• The filter is newly installed, and the taste of the first distillation is a little 'stronger'. After 2-3 cycles, the filter breaks in and the taste is OK.

• The filter is too old, the activated carbon is used up and has undergone more than approximately 50 distillations (with some waters it can be more, with some less), and it no longer has the power to improve the taste, and may even spoil it. The filter needs to be replaced.

• Distilled water, like fine wine, is best at a certain temperature. Distilled water tastes best when chilled to 10-16 degrees. Warm water is OK for hydrating the body, but your taste buds may not enjoy it if it is served too warm.

• You need to get used to the taste of distilled water. Getting used to it is easy, it takes up to a couple of weeks. Once you get used to it, any water other than distilled will have a strange and not very acceptable taste.

What if the glass jug breaks, is that covered by the warranty?
The jug is designed to last and last, even outlasting the device itself, with careful use. And that's a fact that stands until it slips out of your hand onto the table or floor. It's made of thinner glass than the usual 1-liter jugs, all so that it's not too heavy considering its large volume. So be careful with it! With two hands when it's full... it weighs almost 5kg when full!

Chinese distillers have a stronger heater and distill faster... what's the deal?

The Megahome distiller has a 580W heater, distillation takes 5h15, and the temperature of the outlet water is only 2-3 degrees higher than room temperature. The power is optimal for maximum drinkability of the outlet water as well as for the longevity of the device itself.

Devices with a stronger heater and shorter distillation time do not manage to cool the water as much and produce hot water at the outlet, approximately 15-25 degrees warmer than room temperature... which cannot be drunk for a few more hours until it cools to room temperature.

It's a detail that shows that faster and stronger isn't always faster and better.
