Detailed Zelenarium review of the Megahome water distiller!

Tested: Megahome MH 943 water distiller

Review by Zelenarium - a blog about delicious and healthy things: https://zelenarium.com/

I refused distilled water for a long time because I thought it was dead water and it tasted strange to me. What happened that made me change my mind ?

I received a Megahome water distiller to test. In this way, the team from VerVita, without even knowing it, elegantly made sure that I solved the water issue that had been bothering me for a long time. smile

Before we start talking about the distilled water itself and my son's incredible reaction, as well as comparative tests: tap water (at 2 locations in Zagreb), spring water and natural bottled water, we will list everything that comes in the box.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

  • Pot lid (stainless steel)
  • Bowl (stainless steel)
  • Activated carbon filters (6 pieces)
  • A pack of citric acid (for cleaning the pan)
  • Glass jug
  • Power cable
  • Book: Water and your health (Possibilities and risks), Dr. Norman W. Walker

HOW THE MEGAHOME DISTILLATOR WORKS:

The container has a capacity of 4 liters . Do not pour more than that, as 4 liters of water fill the glass jug almost to the top.

The container has a heater at its bottom (which is not visible), which heats the water until it evaporates. The water vapor enters the container lid, which contains a coil for condensing the water vapor and a cooling fan. After condensation, the water vapor passes through an activated carbon filter and comes out drop by drop into a glass jug.

Activated carbon is obtained from coconut shells and serves as a final filter for harmful substances, while also changing the taste of the resulting water.

Distillation time is: 5 hours and 20 minutes . The great thing is that the device turns itself off when all the water is distilled, so you don't have to wait for the distillation to finish.

The distiller starts after you have poured 4 liters of water into it (to the FULL mark), fitted the lid, plugged the cable from the lid into the container, and plugged the power cable from the container into the power outlet. There is a small white button on the container itself that must be pressed to start distillation.

The glass jug has a very solid, sturdy handle.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THE MEGAHOME DISTILLATOR?

You can often come across sources that say that distilled water is safe to drink, but not in the long run, because there are no minerals in it. However, common sense tells me that if we eat enough natural, plant-based food, which ensures the intake of minerals in the body, water will not be the main source of them anyway.

This text is from Dr. Norman Walker's book , Water and Your Health (Opportunities and Risks) , which you will receive with the purchase of this distiller, and which confirms that common sense speaks well to me:

Everything contained in the liquid in colloidal form goes directly to the liver. This includes many minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and others.

When fluids enter the liver, it filters out everything in the fluid except hydrogen and oxygen, which make up pure water (H2O). This is the only water that lymph and blood can use in their work.

Distilled water is the purest water there is.

Of course, we need minerals. But it is important to know which ones. The ones we get in 'normal' water are inorganic and unsuitable for our cells. That is why our cells do not use them but reject them, and they accumulate in our body (primarily in veins, arteries, muscles and joints) and represent a kind of waste and can cause various diseases (ossification, stiffness, senile weakness, death, clogged arteries, etc.). Fortunately, most of them are excreted. Distilled water helps us to flush such inorganic minerals out of the body. So, in this case, we want inorganic minerals to come out of us because they are substances that our body has rejected and deposited. Organic minerals, on the other hand, that the body has stored in its cells and tissues, will not be flushed out, because they are an integral part of the body.

Organic minerals, which our body needs and responds to, come from natural, raw foods: fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and seeds. These foods contain life-giving enzymes. In fact, all plants contain distilled water, water from the atmosphere and other sources, which the plant automatically distills in a natural way.

My 13-year-old son, after smelling the sediment left in the container after distillation, immediately decided that he would never drink another sip of tap water again. Perhaps this information will inspire you to take action regarding the water you drink every day. If you find yourself at one of my trainings at Zelenarium, remind me to show you what the distiller looks like after use. I will be happy to do so. smile

The taste was strange for the first few days. However, now that I drink tap water, I realize how bad and heavy it tastes.

COMPARISON OF DISTILLATION OF 4 TYPES OF WATER:

In addition to distilling tap water in my home (Bukovac, Zagreb), I also distilled water in my office (Centar, Zagreb). However, I was also interested in what happens to purchased natural bottled water, as well as pure spring water.

1. Tap water (at 2 locations in Zagreb)

After I first saw what was left at the bottom of the vessel after distillation, I realized that I would be distilling water for the rest of my life. In the pictures below you will see what the vessel looks like after distillation in the center of Zagreb. The difference compared to the sediment in my apartment is that after the water from the center there were a lot of brown traces left, which even 'baked' on the lid, and nothing ever bakes on the lid.

What I also noticed is that sometimes (most often on weekends), at my house, a much thicker layer of white residue remains.

2. Natural bottled water

I was very interested in what result this distillation would give. Before I got the result, while still distilling, something in the device was very, very loud crackling, bubbling. I thought sadly, it's not broken, is it? However, it turned out that the cause was precisely the natural water from the bottle because the bubbling never happened again.

The sediment, compared to tap water, was somehow more granular, not as 'floury', but it was there:

3. Pure spring water

For this test, I used the spring Žanac on the island of Krk. Beautiful, crystal clear water flowed from the spring into my 5 liter bottle. The results of this test interested me even more than the previous test. The water did not cause bubbling and crackling this time. However, the residue was still there. And quite a bit 'dirtier' than bottled water, as you can see from the photos below.

CONCLUSION:

Although I had been putting off the topic of water for a long time because there were so many theories and suggestions on how to filter and process water, the idea of distilling water somehow 'made sense' to me the most. Especially after I watched the documentary The Secret of Water.

I think everyone should decide for themselves and their family which solution suits them best and which they believe in the most. You will find arguments for and against for everything in life, there is no 100% correct solution for anything (or almost anything).

USING DISTILLED WATER:

In my home, we use distilled water like this for:

  • drink
  • all recipes that call for water (smoothies, blender soups, puddings, dressings, breads, etc.)
  • ice making
  • watering plants
  • iron
  • toothbrush holder

You can also use distilled water for drinking your pets, filling aquariums, skin care, contact lenses, etc.

CONSUMPTION:

If you want the total distillation to take less time, you can also pour in warm water. Personally, I always pour in cold water because it seems to me that warm water always has more scale.

I always distill overnight, when electricity is cheaper. A good idea is to buy a timer and program it to turn on at a certain time of night.

This distiller has double protection against overheating, and according to information from VerVita's instructions, electricity consumption is up to 3 kWh per distillation. This would mean that electricity consumption in kuna amounts to approx. 2-3 HRK/distillation.

NOISE:

This distiller does not make too much noise. The volume is similar to that produced by a fan for cooling a room in the summer. However, if your distiller is located in a kitchen that is connected to the living room in one room, as is the case with me, it will be more convenient for you to start it at night. Which is desirable, considering the lower consumption, which I wrote about earlier.

HEATING:

The device heats the room during distillation, which is good in the colder months of the year, as it provides additional heat. However, in the summer, this is not so desirable, so I keep it on the balcony in the summer.

DIMENSIONS:

Bowl with lid: diameter: 23.5 cm, height: 36 cm

Glass jug: diameter: 20 cm, height: 20 cm

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE:

Everyday: I have one dishwashing sponge that I use only for the distiller. After each distillation, new sediment forms on the inside of the vessel. I remove some of the sediment that hasn't stuck to the vessel with the sponge. Sometimes, after distillation, I find limescale residue on the lid of the vessel, but it's easily removed with the sponge. In the center of Zagreb, where my office is, a brown mark forms on the lid that is very difficult to remove from the lid. I attribute this mark to old pipes. :(

IMPORTANT: I never open the lid immediately after distillation is complete because the entire device and its interior are hot.

Once a month: descaling, with hot water and citric acid. I let it boil for about 20 minutes, turn it off and wait for the water to cool before rinsing.

Once a month: replace the filter (if you distill once a day).

WARRANTY:

7 years on the whole device, rusting of the evaporator pot and the fan motor for both domestic and commercial use (laboratories and similar). The warranty does not cover the wear and tear of the silicone cover gasket, which is considered a consumable.
