Awareness of organic food production and purchase is constantly growing. More and more people feel better about buying organic products, not only for their own health, but also from some ecological aspects. The trend of healthy food has encouraged the development of agriculture that respects the environment and organic farming without artificial fertilizers and other harmful chemicals. The origin and quality of goods are becoming increasingly important factors when purchasing certain products, including coffee, which can also be found on the shelves with the epithet organic.
Awareness of the production and purchase of organic food is constantly growing. More and more people feel better by buying organic products, not only for their own health, but also from some ecological aspects. Organic coffee is grown using natural methods according to organic farming standards without the use of pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizers, etc.
In order for coffee to be sold as organic (which implies a higher price), it must receive a certificate confirming that it is indeed organic. It is important that it meets the following requirements:
- growing on soil without the use of pesticides and similar substances for three years,
- sufficient protection (space) between organic coffee and the nearest traditional crop (also coffee or some other plant),
- sustainable crop rotation plan as prevention of erosion, salt depletion, control of (non)use of pesticides.
Organic coffee is more expensive than non-organic because it requires more hard work, and the yield is, of course, lower, and because of the aforementioned mandatory certificates.
FAIR TRADE
Fair trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue and paying a fair price for raw materials, products or labor to ensure profitability and sustainability for producers, and the prices for products paid to producers are usually higher than prices on the world market.
Fair trade aims to improve the living conditions of vulnerable producers, and unfortunately, among them are often children who use this method of trade to protect themselves from exploitation.
The fair trade movement focuses mainly on products from developing countries that are exported to developed countries.
How much coffee have you drunk so far? Do you know that 1 kg of raw coffee from, for example, Ethiopia is sold for about $1? From that kilogram, 80 to 100 coffees are served. Their price varies, but on average they cost around $2. Of that amount, the producer usually gets 1% (or only 0.02 cents out of $2)! It is similar with tea, bananas, cocoa, cotton...
Is that fair?
Unfortunately, most of us have not been "Fairtrade consumers" until now. For the most part, we unknowingly supported trade relations in which the producer receives a miserable price for his product, and the majority of the revenue is collected by large companies. The good news is that we can change that in a simple way: if we prioritize products that carry the Fairtrade label in our daily shopping. No sending of aid to developing countries is necessary. It is enough to buy those products that were fairly paid "from the field to the table".
